Ports of Oman

The Sultanate of Oman is a sea-faring nation from time memorial given its geography and location. The country is flanked in the north by the Gulf of Oman, in the east & south by the Arabian Sea and in the west by United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Historically, the nation’s contact with the rest of the world is by sea that links it to foreign lands as well as the coastal towns of Oman. From time immemorial the ports in Oman have always been the important trade destinations for the sailors traversing the silk route. The nation’s history is intertwined with the history of its ports. Oman’s strategic location with the Straits of Hormuz in the north and the Arabian Sea in the east, and a coastline that stretches 1,700 km makes it a vital trading centre in the Middle East.

The main ports in Oman are:


Khasab port lies in the District of Khasab in Musandam Governorate and is used mainly by Dhows and cruise vessels. Is having 300m berth with 10m draft and can handle general cargo, break bulk and cruise vessels which can work with ships crane. Project cargo vessels can also be handled depending on the cargo weight and strengthening of the berth if required. Presently Marine Services such as Pilotage and Tugs are not available. Fast Ferries operated by NFC is having regular passenger services between Muscat – Khasab – Muscat route

Future Plans :

Dedicated berth and terminal for Fast Ferries, expanded berths for cruise vessels. Commercial traffic is expected to grow significantly with Iran due to close proximity.

SIPC ( Sohar Industrial Port Company ) is a joint venture between the Government of the Sultanate of Oman and the Port of Rotterdam from the Netherlands and are the operators of the Sohar port.

Sohar port is operational with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment M/s. STEINWEG operates General Cargo Terminal while M/s. ODFJELL operates Oil Terminal and the container terminal is operated by M/s. OICT.

Sohar Port houses some major industrial developments of Oman such as Fertilizer Plant, Vale Iron Ore Plant, Steel, Refinery & Petrochemicals, Aluminum Smelter, Ferro Chrome Smelter, Methanol plant and Aromatics plant.

Port of Mina Al Fahal is situated at Mina al Fahal in the Muscat Governorate of Oman.This port is operated and managed by Petroleum Development Oman LLC.The port was established near a large oil-developing and petrol processing plant, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). It was renamed from Saih al Maleh as the petroleum processing plant was developed. 

Is having offshore facility comprising three SBMs for handling crude oil and petroleum products. The cargo is loaded on to tankers off Mina Al Fahal by subsea pipeline.

This port is presently used only for cruise vessel and naval vessel handling. Port Sultan Qaboos (previously known as Mina Qaboos) was developed initially as a part of a plan for a "Greater Muttrah". The port`s construction was completed in the 1970s. The port is operated and managed by Port Services Corporation S.A.O.G.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced that as of 31 August 2014, the port would cease commercial operations, preceding its transformation into a cruise ship port and the Cargo operations are shifting to Sohar Industrial Port in Sohar.  The government has cited congested road traffic in Muscat as a reason for the move.

Duqm Port in Al Wusta Governorate enjoys a superior and open location. It is a multi-purpose port and its importance has increased after building a dry dock for ship repair to be added to the many facilities already present in the port. Situated on the southeastern seaboard of the Sultanate of Oman, overlooking the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean beyond, Port of Duqm is fast becoming an important reality of the Middle East region’s rapidly transforming maritime landscape. With its deep draft, lengthy quay walls, and expansive basin, Port of Duqm has the trappings of a world-class, multipurpose commercial gateway. The 300m quay for general cargo has been equipped with a range of cargo handling gear suited for the handling of a wide variety of general and project cargoes.

A 1,600-metre length of the commercial quay has been set aside for the development of a dedicated Container Terminal.

This facility will primarily serve the feedstock and export requirements of a major refinery and petrochemicals complex planned at the adjoining SEZ.

Port of Duqm will play a key role as a catalyst in the commercialization of the potentially vast minerals resources of the Wusta region

There is no restriction for LOA and Beam and the approach channel draft is 19m where as the draft in the quay is 18m.

Is recognized globally as a leading transshipment hub among the world’s top ports. Salalah container terminal first began operating at Port Raysut (later renamed the Port of Salalah), in the Sultanate of Oman, in November 1998. Port of Salalah is a made up of a Container Terminal with seven berths of up to 18m draft and a General Cargo Terminal of twelve berths of up to 16m draft, with infrastructure to handle the world`s largest container vessels, as well as bulk cargo, bunkering and warehousing. Major Container Shipping Lines such as Maersk, MSC and CMA CGM call Port of Salalah on weekly schedules.
